By 1984 a great deal was known about the physiology of marathon and longer races with technical articles on both nutrition, hydration, altitude, and temperature appearing, particularly in specialist long distance running publications out at the time eg. publications such as the 'Road Runners' Club Newsletter.' So how / why did Gabriela get into such a state? Only she can say but I will make a few observations which may be relevant. Even at the highest competitive levels many athletes are severely lacking in technical knowledge, and many choose to adopt the lazy approach of relying entirely on their coaches' instructions. Coaches advising top drawer athletes vary enormously in ability levels. There have always only been a few coaches with expertise in serious long distance and ultra running. At that time possibly only a handful in the entire world. That coupled with the fact that this was one of the first long distance races for females I think suggests a great deal.

1:05 Commentator said: Long distance was too demanding for women as per Olympic committee" and at 4:55 Commentator said "made a mockery of the idea that female athletes lacked the will power"... seems these 2 statements are not in sync. Olympic didnt comment anything about women's will power. Anyone with common sense knows that pregnancy birth is one of the most painful thing a human can undergo. So, women never lacked the will power. It's just that physically they aren't as strong as men
